Mayor's Youth Council
About the MYC
What is the Mayor’s Youth Council?
The Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC) started in 1998 with the mission of providing high school students the opportunity to develop leadership and citizenship skills while learning about city government. Modeled after the elected Houston City Council, the MYC provides valuable experience to its members in the workings of city government.
Who is eligible?
High school students who reside within the City of Houston city limits. Successful applicants demonstrate strong interests in gaining knowledge about city government, civic engagement and promoting discussion on youth-related issues. They also demonstrate participation in extracurricular activities and volunteering, and work well with other young people from a variety of diverse cultures and backgrounds.
How are members selected?
Members are chosen through an application and interview process. A selection committee reviews the applications, and some students are chosen for personal interviews. All students who submit applications are informed by email of their status once final decisions have been made. The call for applications usually goes out in September once the school year has started.
