January 16, 2024 - Houston police have learned a male injured in a hit-and-run crash at 3500 Hillcroft Street about 9:40 p.m. on January 2 has died.

The male is identified as Waswa Sula, 38.

The driver, Gabriel Mejia Cor, 25, was arrested and charged with failure to stop and render aid in the 184th State District Court.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant D. Rose and Officer J. Bibb reported:

Mr. Sula, a pedestrian, was crossing the street at the above address - not in a crosswalk - when he was struck by a silver Toyota Corolla.  The driver, Mejia Cor, fled the scene.  He and his vehicle were located a short time later.  Patrol officers took Mejia Cor into custody and then to the Harris County Jail.

Sula was conscious and breathing when paramedics transported him to a hospital.  Investigators learned he was released from the hospital on January 7.

On January 13, Sula was found unresponsive on a sidewalk and taken to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
