Investigation into Fatal Shooting Incident at 110 East 44th Street
January 7, 2019 - Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a suspect at 110 East 44th Street about 4:35 p.m. last Friday (Jan. 4) after the suspect shot three persons in an area neighborhood.
The identity of the male suspect, 32, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
The HPD officer who discharged his duty weapon is J. Sheen, assigned to the North Patrol Division and sworn in as an officer in May 2018. Officer Sheen was not injured in the incident.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant M. Ynosencio and Detectives E. Contreras, R. Gonzalez, M. Glover and D. Hobson reported:
Officers were dispatched to a shooting call at 226 E 44th Street and learned that three men were shot by the suspect at that location. Officers located the suspect at 110 East 44th Street and approached him as he was struggling with a female. One officer gave the suspect verbal commands to get on the ground. The suspect turned toward the officers holding a pistol in front of his body. At that time, one of the officers discharged his duty weapon at the suspect and struck him at least one time. The officers immediately secured the suspect’s pistol and attempted to administer first aid to him. Paramedics arrived and pronounced the suspect deceased at the scene.
The preliminary investigation - conducted with assistance of the HPD Major Assaults & Family Violence Division - revealed the incident began about 4:25 p.m. at 200 W 44th St, where the suspect had a confrontation with one victim, Douglas Alvizures, 18. Witnesses stated the suspect pulled out a firearm from his waist band and shot Alvizures in the leg. The suspect then proceeded to shoot and shoot at multiple other persons as he walked eastbound on West 44th St. Two other victims, Edwin Robbie Triggs, 23, and Lavelle Spears, 30, were wounded. All three victims were transported to area hospitals and are expected to survive their injuries. Preliminary on-scene information indicated Spears was the suspect's brother. However, that is not the case.
All witnesses said the suspect appeared under the influence of unknown drugs during the incidents.
As is customary in officer-involved shootings in the city limits, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit and Internal Affairs Division, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
