Investigation into Shooting Incident at 9421 Cullen
Houston police are investigating the shooting of a male suspect by an HPD officer at 9421 Cullen Boulevard about 12:45 a.m. on Saturday (May 26).
The suspect, James Wright, (b/m, 46), sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital, where he is expected to survive his injuries.
Officer T. Gooden, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in the incident. He is assigned to the Southeast Patrol Division and was sworn in as an officer in April 2016.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Detectives M. Seay, R. Lujan, R. Gonzales and G. Garcia reported:
HPD patrol officers responded to a trespassing call at a gas station at the above address and detained three males and a female. As officers conducted their investigation, a black vehicle, unknown if involved in the original incident, reversed at a high rate of speed and struck the female, as well as an officer's patrol vehicle. The suspect (Wright) then drove off at a very low rate of speed. Officer Gooden pursued the vehicle on foot through the parking lot. Fearing for his safety and that of the female, Officer Gooden discharged his duty weapon, striking the vehicle and the suspect. HFD paramedics responded to the scene and transported Wright to the hospital.
As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents in the Houston city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit, the HPD Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
