Investigation into Shooting Incident at 11400 Trickey Road

February 23, 2017 - Houston police are investigating the shooting of an HPD K-9 at 11400 Trickey Road about 11:55 a.m. on Wednesday (February 22).

The K-9, named Jake, suffered two gunshot wounds and was transported to an emergency veterinary facility in critical, but stable condition.  Jake is expected to survive and recover from his injuries.

The HPD officer who discharged his duty weapon, L. Castillo, suffered a bite wound to one of his legs.  He was treated at an area hospital and then released.  Officer Castillo, assigned to the North Patrol Division, was sworn in as an officer in January 2009.

HPD Homicide Division Senior Police Officers S. Spivey and R. Pemberton reported:

HPD officers were involved in a pursuit of a stolen vehicle occupied by two possible robbery suspects.  The suspects lost control of their vehicle at the above address and continued evading arrest on foot.  A K-9 unit was deployed to apprehend the two suspects. An HPD officer, who managed to get in between the fleeing suspects and the K-9, sustained a dog bite on the thigh.  As he was being bitten, the officer discharged his weapon and struck the HPD K-9.  The two suspects were eventually apprehended.

As is customary when an HPD officer discharges a weapon resulting in an injury, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions.
