HPD Homicide Division Senior Police Officer J. Villareal and Officer R. Lujan reported:
Tristan Powell was admitted to Texas Children's Hospital last Thursday (May 28) with head injuries. Investigators with the HPD Special Victim's Division Child Abuse Unit initiated a preliminary investigation and determined Tristan had been physically abused by his father, Anthony Powell, on multiple occasions. Powell's sister (Land) told investigators she saw Powell strike Tristan many times over a period of several days beginning on May 10, when the child was picked up from his mother's residence in Jasper, Texas.
Land then told investigators she saw Powell strike Tristan on the head with an open hand, causing him to fall to the floor. Powell then picked up Tristan and struck him again with his open hand multiple times, causing him to fall and hit his head on the floor in a violent manner. After this incident, Land told police Tristan exhibited unusual behavior and told her he was very sleepy. He was then transported to the hospital.
Land and Powell were taken into custody on May 30th and subsequently charged for their involvement in Tristan's death.
