Crime Decreases in Houston for First Six Months of Year
July 20, 2015 - Houston Police Chief Charles A. McClelland, Jr. recently released UCR Part 1 crime statistics showing overall crime in the city is down, with decreases in most categories compared to the same time one year ago.
Two categories of importance to many citizens - home burglaries and burglaries of motor vehicles - showed the largest decreases with numbers of those crimes dropping 18.9% and 10.4% respectively for the first six months of 2015.
Thefts and auto thefts were also down, with overall property crimes 7.1% lower than last year.
Violent crime in Houston shows a 1.7% decrease in total numbers of incidents. The category with the largest increase is murder, which is up 44% for the first six months of the year. Murders were up 58% for the first three months of the year, so the number is trending down the last three months. Robberies have shown a slight increase of 1.3%, while rapes have decreased 9.4% and aggravated assaults showing a 4.8% drop.
