Houston Police Department
Investigation into Incident at 914 Dallas

February 27, 2014 - Houston police are investigating an incident in which a Houston police officer discharged his duty weapon at an armed burglary suspect at 914 Dallas about 9:25 a.m. today.

The male suspect, in his 50s, was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital with a gunshot wound to the arm.

Officer S. Gallagher, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in the incident. Officer Gallagher, sworn in as an officer in January 2010, is assigned to the Burglary and Theft Division.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeants M. A. Holbrook, H. Garcia and Officer C. Cardenas reported:

Officer Gallagher, on duty and in plain clothes, was purchasing a beverage at the above address when an employee told him the suspect had stolen something and left the location. Officer Gallagher then followed the suspect into the street, identified himself as a police officer, and gave him verbal commands to stop. The suspect became combative and refused to follow the officer's commands. At some point, the suspect picked up a large piece of lumber and attempted to strike the officer by swinging it at him. Fearing for his safety, Officer Gallagher discharged his duty weapon, wounding the suspect. The suspect was then taken into custody and transported to the hospital.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
