Update: Male Sought for Questioning in Fatal Shooting at 1600 North Loop West
August 12, 2014 - Houston police have released a photo of a person of interest wanted in the fatal shooting of a man and wounding of a woman at 1600 North Loop West (North Interstate Highway 610 West) about 11:20 p.m. last Friday (August 8).
The individual wanted for questioning is described as a Hispanic male with a slim build and black spiky hair. The male has tattoos of an oil derrick (the former Houston Oilers logo) on his right forearm and a bull with horns (like the Houston Texans logo) on his left shoulder. He was wearing a red T-shirt with "Hollister 22" on the front. A photo of the male is attached to this news release.
The deceased victim, Jawanza Rooker, 20, of Houston, suffered a gunshot wound to the back and was pronounced dead at the scene. The wounded woman, 19, was transported to an area hospital and later released.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M. Dillingham and Officers V. McLean, S. Overstreet and T. Colbert reported:
Mr. Rooker and a female friend attempted to drive away from the above location after a drug deal went bad. At that time, unknown suspects followed them and fired several shots at their vehicle. Rooker, the driver, lost control of the vehicle and drove off the road into a grass median.
Investigators developed information on a person of interest and are urging anyone with information on his identity or whereabouts to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
