August 4, 2014 - Houston police are investigating an incident in which an HPD officer discharged his weapon at three suspects as they assaulted him at 2309 Fannin about 1:20 a.m. on Sunday (August 3).
Officer E. Reyes, who discharged his weapon, is assigned to the South Central Patrol Station and was sworn in as an officer in May 1994. The officer suffered lacerations and contusions to his face and head during this incident.
The suspects are still at large.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M. Holbrook and Officer K. McDonald reported:
Officer Reyes, who was off-duty and in plain clothes, was working at a parking lot at the above address when he was approached by a suspect, described only as a heavyset black male, approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall and wearing a black and white striped shirt. The suspect stated his vehicle had been damaged in the parking lot and he led Officer Reyes to the far corner of the lot to look at the damage. While Officer Reyes and the suspect were walking, they were joined by another black male. Once the first suspect pointed to a vehicle, the two suspects, along with a third black male suspect, began striking Officer Reyes in the head. Officer Reyes fell to the ground and the suspects continued kicking and punching him. Officer Reyes, in fear of his life, drew his handgun and announced that he was a police officer. The suspects continued punching and kicking the officer and attempted to take his firearm from him. The handgun was knocked to the ground. Officer Reyes was able to regain control of the weapon and then fired one time at the suspects. None of the suspects was believed to have been struck by the round. The suspects then fled on foot through the parking lot.
