Suspect Arrested, Charged in Incident at 660 Maxey
August 8, 2013 - Charges have been filed against a suspect who fired shots at Houston police officers and shot a family member at 660 Maxey about 9:55 a.m. on Wednesday (August 7).
The suspect, Enrique Gutierrez (H/m, DOB: 8-21-61), is charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a public servant and one count of aggravated assault on a family member in the 338th State District Court. A photo of Gutierrez is attached to this news release.
The wounded female victim, 83, was transported to Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital in stable condition.
Officer W. Purser, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in the incident. Officer Purser, assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division, was sworn in as an officer in May 1993.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant E. Cisneros and Officer H. Chavez reported:
When HPD officers arrived to a disturbance call at the above location, Gutierrez walked outside and began shooting at the officers with an assault rifle. HPD patrol vehicles were struck multiple times and Officer Purser, in fear of his safety and the safety of his fellow officers, discharged his duty weapon. Gutierrez was not struck and then reloaded his weapon and began firing at his own family members. Gutierrez's mother-in-law was struck one time and was transported to the hospital. Gutierrez retreated inside the residence and the HPD Special Weapons and Tactics team was called. Once a perimeter was set up around Gutierrez's residence, he walked outside and was taken into custody.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions.
