August 20, 2012 - Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a child at 8339 Ponnel about 3 a.m. on Sunday (Aug. 19).

The identity of the deceased girl, 11 months old, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeants R. Chandler and M. Jewell reported:

The victim and several other persons were inside a vehicle parked in the driveway at the above address when an unknown male suspect fired several rounds in the vehicle's direction, striking it several times. One of the bullets penetrated the back seat of the car and struck the child. She was transported to Texas Children's Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The motive for the shooting is unknown at this time.
