Armed Suspect Fatally Shot at 11727 West Sam Houston Parkway
August 8, 2012 - Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed male suspect at 11727 South Sam Houston Parkway West about 12:50 p.m. on Tuesday (Aug. 7).
The male suspect, identified as Monta Cordell Fizer (b/m, DOB: 10-4-78), was pronounced dead at the scene.
Senior Police Officer J. M. McPhail, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in the incident. Officer McPhail, sworn in as an officer in June 1984, is assigned to the South Gessner Patrol Division.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant R. Rohling and Senior Police Officer J. Robles reported:
Officer McPhail responded to a call from a female at the above address, who stated her ex-husband (Fizer) had threatened her and was on his way to her workplace. When Officer McPhail arrived, he saw Fizer getting into a cab in the parking lot in front of the business. Officer McPhail gave verbal commands for the driver and Fizer to exit the taxi immediately. The taxi driver complied, however, Fizer remained in the taxi. Officer McPhail then took cover and repeatedly gave Fizer verbal commands to exit the taxi and to get on the ground and show his hands, which he ignored. Fizer suddenly exited the taxi and, with one hand behind his back, walked toward Officer McPhail. Fearing for his life, Officer McPhail discharged his duty weapon and struck Fizer. Arriving offciers began to administer first aid, but Fizer died at the scene. A pistol Fizer was armed with was recovered at the scene.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shootings in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
