March 1, 2011 - At a news briefing today (March 1), Houston Police Chief Charles A. McClelland, Jr. announced the department’s 27th annual “March on Crime/Lucha Contra El Crimen.”

For the entire month of March, the Houston Police Department will highlight education initiatives to address property crimes such as burglaries of motor vehicles (BMVs) and burglaries of residences and businesses.

“March on Crime is one of the basic tenants of community policing,” said Chief McClelland.  “Here at HPD, community policing is not a program, it’s a philosophy which never ends.  We know the community cannot do it alone and the police department cannot do it alone.  We have to have a community partnership for all of us to be successful,” Chief McClelland added.

Community policing does not just happen in March, HPD officers work with the community 12 months a year.

“Our mission every day is to keep 2.5 million people and their property safe,” said Chief McClelland.  “We use March on Crime to refocus attention on this goal.  Thanks to everyone’s efforts, last year we able to reduce both violent and property crime,” Chief McClelland added.
