HPD, Partners to Put Brakes on Drunk Driving

June 8, 2011 - The Houston Police Department's Traffic Enforcement Division, along with the Harris County Sheriff's Office, the Harris County Precinct 5 Constable's Office, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (M.A.D.D.), and other law enforcement partners announced a regional joint initiative against drunk driving at a news availability today.

Beginning this Friday (June 10) and through the July 4th holiday weekend, HPD and 23 other participating agencies from Montgomery, Harris and Fort Bend Counties will have an increased presence throughout the region to target drunk driving offenders.

This unprecedented initiative is designed to reduce drunk driving accidents and associated fatalities by a combination of public education and a heightened enforcement of drinking and driving offenses.

Harris County leads the nation in alcohol related fatalities and in Houston, more than 50 percent of fatal accidents were as a result of drunk drivers.

HPD Traffic Enforcement Division Captain Carl Driskell said, "We like to be number one in a lot of things but we don't want to be number one in this category. DWI is one hundred percent preventable, no excuses. If you know you're going to drink, get a designated driver," Capt. Driskell added.
