Fatal Shooting at 1370 Afton #817 June 7, 2010 - Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a woman and apparent suicide of a man at 1370 Afton #817 about 6:20 p.m. on Saturday (June 5). The female, Maria Aracel Portillo, 45, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. The male suspect, Humberto Canjura (H/m, DOB: 5-28-51), suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. HPD Homicide Division Sergeant W. Meeler and Senior Police Officer J. Selvera reported: Ms. Portillo and her son went to visit Canjura, who is her ex-husband, at his apartment. Soon after they entered the apartment, Canjura pulled out a gun and shot Portillo several times. The son managed to escape and called police. Northwest patrol officers responded to the scene and found the apartment door closed. Believing Canjura was barricaded inside, the HPD Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team was called to the scene. Shortly after arriving, SWAT entered the apartment and found Canjura and Portillo deceased. VHS/KJS 6-7-10
