Update: Officer Involved Shooting Incident at 15615 Eastex Freeway

March 20, 2009 - Houston police homicide investigators have learned a female suspect was wounded during a confrontation with Houston police officers at 15615 Eastex Freeway (U.S. Highway 59 North) service road about 9:45 p.m. on Thursday (Mar. 19). 

The adult female was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital in stable condition with a gunshot wound to her leg.  Officer C.A. Curtis, who discharged his duty weapon, is assigned to the Kingwood Patrol Division and was sworn in as an officer in June 2000.  He was not injured in this incident. 

HPD Homicide Division Sergeants C. M. Cegielski and A. Semmelrock reported: 

The HPD Narcotics Division was conducting an investigation regarding possible suspects and vehicles involved in a drug transaction at a truck stop at 15615 Eastex Freeway service road.  Narcotics officers conducted surveillance at the location and saw the vehicles, with several suspects inside, parked in the back of the business.  Marked patrol units were then called to approach the vehicles.  As patrol officers arrived and approached the vehicles, a suspect in one of the vehicles, a tan Chevrolet truck, began ramming the patrol car parked behind him.  The suspect rammed the patrol car several times, pushed the patrol vehicle back and then turned his truck towards Officer Curtis, who was standing outside his vehicle.  Fearing for his life, Officer Curtis discharged his duty weapon twice at the suspect.  The suspect then struck a second patrol vehicle and fled.  It was unknown if the suspect or anyone else was struck. 

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office contacted HPD investigators after locating a female who stated she had been shot at the Eastex Freeway location.  The female was being sought on a felony warrant in Montgomery County.  She is considered a suspect and witness in the Eastex Freeway incident. 

As is customary in officer-involved shootings occurring within the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
