Fatal Traffic Accident at 2500 South Loop West

December 21, 2009 - Charges have been filed against a driver arrested in a fatal hit-and-run traffic accident in the 2500 block of the South Loop West (Interstate Highway 610 South) about 7:30 p.m. on Friday (Dec. 18).

The suspect, Juan Elvi Benitez (H/m, DOB: 12/2/76), is charged with failure to stop and render aid in the 263rd State District Court.

The victim, Stephen Cannon, 27, of Houston, was pronounced dead at the scene.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant E. Spencer and Officer F. Bashir reported:

Mr. Cannon was attempting to cross the freeway when he was struck by a gold Nissan Frontier driven by Benitez. After striking Cannon, Benitez fled the scene and was later located in a parking lot in the 1600 block of the South Loop West. Benitez submitted to an alcohol blood draw and additional charges are pending.
