HPD Celebrates Grand Re-Opening of Ike-Damaged Storefront August 26, 2009 - Members of the Houston Police Department Southeast Patrol Division and local residents celebrated the official grand re-opening of the Telephone Road Storefront today. The storefront, located at 10201 Telephone Road, had suffered major damage during Hurricane Ike that resulted in its 10-month closure. “Water came into the storefront and we had mold in the walls, said HPD Officer Trenesia Harris. “They had to remove the sheetrock and gut the storefront before rebuilding it.” Community members and businesses then donated furniture, appliances, and even decorations. For the community, the storefront is about both convenience and visibility. “I think it helps prevent crime because when people see police cars around then they’re likely to keep on going down the road,” said Rosemary Acrey, President of the Gulf Meadows Civic Club and a volunteer at the storefront. “Plus, it helps people who need to file reports. They don’t need to go to the main police station, or try to find one, this is right here in the neighborhood,” Ms. Acrey said. “The citizens wanted us in this community,” said Officer Harris. “They saw fit to help us rebuild and that’s why we wanted to have this day for them and for everyone to come and see what they helped build.”For additional information, please contact the HPD Public Affairs Division at 713-308-3200 . |
