Armed Suspect Fatally Shot at 3742 Southlawn

April 27, 2009 - Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed suspect following a shooting incident with on duty Houston police officers at 3742 Southlawn about 3:10 p.m. on Friday (April 24).

The suspect, Jose Alfredo Vides, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers M. Valle, E. Tewes and R. Stanfield, who discharged their duty weapons, were not injured.  Officer Valle and Tewes, assigned to the Southeast Patrol Division were sworn in as officers in April 2007.  Officer Stanfield, also assigned to the Southeast Patrol Division, was sworn in as an officer in January 2008.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant R. Torres and Senior Police Officer J. Anderson reported:

Patrol officers responded to a call of a suspicious person with a gun at 3742 Southlawn.  When officers arrived at the location they found suspect Vides armed with a gun.  Officers Valle, Tewes and Stanfield gave repeated verbal commands to Vides to drop the gun.  Vides refused to comply, raised his gun towards the officers and began firing.  Fearing for their lives, the officers returned fire and moved to take cover.  Vides pursued the officers and both sides exchanged gunfire.  Vides was struck repeatedly and was pronounced dead at the scene.  An investigation and witness statements determined Vides was upset about an earlier event involving his vehicle and the police, then obtained a handgun from his friend, went to his girlfriend’s apartment, told her to call police and began creating a disturbance outside her apartment.  Other residents and visitors at the apartments witnessed the disturbance and also called the police.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shootings in the city limits, the case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
