HPD Starts Registration of Convenience Stores as
Required by City Ordinance

June 23, 2008 - The Houston Police Department is very proud of the efforts and strides made in working with the convenience store industry, which includes independent storeowners, to develop a city ordinance that is geared toward making the convenience stores in our city safer for the business owners, employees, and customers. On March 26, 2008, City Council passed the Convenience Store Ordinance, starting the process of making convenience stores safer for everyone.

As we move forward in this unique partnership to make our city safer, one of the initial phases of the ordinance involves the required online registration of all convenience stores in the city of Houston. The Houston Police Department has developed an online registration process and convenience store owners can access it through the department’s website at:

https://www.houstontx.gov/police/convenience_store/registration_form.htm

The required registration facilitates greater, positive interaction between the Houston Police Department and the convenience store community and serves to improve data tracking concerning crimes around convenience stores. In addition, once a convenience store has successfully registered, they will be provided a security packet that will include a security training DVD to aid storeowners in training their employees on crime prevention and personal safety. Storeowners will also be provided with a decal to be displayed at the entrance to the business and a registration certificate.
