Warning Period Ends Today For 20 City Of Houston Red Light Safety Camera Approaches

October 1, 2007 - Notices Of Violation For New Approaches And Illegal Turns On Red Begin

The 30-day public education period for 20 approaches at intersections where red light cameras are already in use ends today. This period began on August 31, 2007. The cameras monitor the same 20 intersections, but from additional directions (approaches). Registered owners of vehicles photographed by the cameras running red lights at one of the new approaches, or making an illegal turn on red at any of the 70 camera approaches across the city, will receive a formal Notice of Violation and $75 penalty. Since the City of Houston’s Red Light Camera Enforcement Safety Campaign went live on September 1, 2006, more than 127,000 Notices of Violation have been issued, with an 11 percent decrease in violations issued over the last six months for the first set of 10 camera locations.

A red light running violation occurs when a vehicle faces a steady red traffic signal and proceeds into an intersection without stopping and standing until an indication to proceed is given. A turn on red violation occurs when a vehicle makes a right turn, or a left turn from a one-way street onto another one-way street, while facing a steady red signal, without first coming to a complete stop and not proceeding until it is safe to do so and yielding right-of-way to pedestrians lawfully in an adjacent crosswalk and to other traffic lawfully using the intersection.
