March 19, 2007 -- City continues toward objective of increasing public safety and reducing preventable crashes caused by motorists running red lights

The city of Houston has announced that the fourth set of 10 red light safety cameras are operating at the following locations:

Each of Houston’s red light cameras are located at high accident sites. The cameras help the Houston Police Department reduce serious crashes related to red light violation through the promotion of driver awareness.

Since the first 10 red light cameras began operating on September 1, 2006 nearly 40,000 Notice of Violations have been issued.

The automated red light photo traffic safety system captures still images and video of red light runners and Notice of Violations are issued. Cameras photograph only the vehicle and the license plate of vehicles running red lights. No images of the driver or passengers are captured. Each set of images of a red light violation are reviewed by the Houston Police Department before a Notice of Violation is mailed to the registered owner. The registered owner has four options to resolve the Notice of Violation: (1) pay the $75 fine either by mail, phone using a credit card, or in person, (2) pay online at www.ViolationInfo.com, (3) appeal the violation in Municipal Court through an Adjudication Hearing Officer, or (4) submit a “Declaration of Non-Liability” through the Court for its review stating that the vehicle’s registered owner was not driving the car at the time the violation was recorded. Violators can view their violations and video online at www.ViolationInfo.com.

In its continuing effort to increase public safety and reduce preventable crashes caused by motorists running red lights, the city of Houston intends to install a total of 50 cameras by mid-2007.
