Traffic Incident at 8900 East Freeway

March 9, 2007 -- Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident at 8900 East Freeway (I-10) about 11:55 p.m. on Thursday (Mar. 8).

The victim is identified as Joel W. Hamner, 55. He was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

HPD Mobility Incident Management Division Sergeant P. Casares and Officer M. Wick reported:

Mr. Hamner was driving a gray 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck eastbound in the westbound lanes of the East Freeway when he crashed into a concrete pillar just below the 610 Loop. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor; however, the victim may have suffered from a medical condition that may have been a contributing factor.

The investigation is continuing.
