Incident at 9400 Derrik
February 21, 2007 -- The fatal
shooting of a burglary suspect by a homeowner at 9400 Derrik about
6 a.m. Tuesday (February 20) will be referred to a Harris County
grand jury.
The homeowner , whose name is unknown at this
time, suffered a minor gunshot wound.
The suspect suffered a gunshot wound and died
at the scene. His identity is pending verification by the Harris
County Medical Examiner’s office.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant A. Carrillo and
Officer X. Avila reported:
The homeowner had his vehicle parked outside
of his residence at 4000 Blalock when he observed the suspect
breaking into the car. The homeowner saw the suspect through his
video monitoring system, grabbed his handgun and went outside
to confront the suspect. The suspect ran to a nearby white vehicle
and exchanged gunfire with the homeowner. The suspect’s
vehicle drove into a ditch as he and another male in the white
vehicle attempted to leave.
A second suspect, Calvin Williams Kemp (b/m,
DOB 11-23-85), was later found by officers who discovered he had
counterfeit money in his possession. Kemp was arrested and charged
with forgery in the 183rd State District Court.
