Incident at 4300 South Loop East
June 5, 2006 -- Houston police
are investigating the death of a man at 4300 South Loop East about
5:50 a.m. on Sunday (June 4).
The deceased male's identity is pending notification
to family members.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M. Scott and Officer
R. Martinez reported:
A passing motorist contacted police after observing
a male, who appeared to be very intoxicated, walking on the freeway.
An officer responded to the area and located the male in the 4300
block of the South Loop East. The officer attempted to move the
man from the inside lane to safety when the man began to struggle
and fight with the officer. A passing motorist, observing the
struggle, stopped to assist the officer. The man lost consciousness
and was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital where he later died.
Further investigation is pending the cause of death by the Harris
County Medical Examiner's office.
As is customary in in-custody deaths in the city
limits, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide
and Internal Affairs Divisions and the Harris County District
Attorney's office.
