Incident at 6633 West Airport
January 30, 2006 -- A 42-year-old
man is charged with murder after an altercation turned into gunfire
on Sunday, January 29, 2006 at 6633 West Airport around 10:55
a.m.
According to Houston Police Department Homicide
Sergeant T.C. Bloyd and Officer D.L. Robertson, the suspect, Jay
Evertt Scurlock (bm- DOB 7-8-63) went to apartment #1104 at 6633
West Airport attempting to recover several appliances that he
believed to be his. Since the apartments are privately owned and
recently changed hands, Scurlock considered the appliances inside
to still be his property.
An argument ensured and the current tenant called
her two brothers to the apartment to help retain the appliances.
Scurlock argued with the brothers, one of which was the victim,
17-year-old Tony Dorsett Smith. Scurlock was attempting to leave
the scene in his car but one of the brothers tried to stop him
by standing behind Scurlocks' car. Scurlock backed up and knocked
the brother to the ground. Smith, seeing his brother on the ground,
began pounding on Scurlocks' window trying to get him to stop.
Smith obtained a tire tool from the trunk of his car and continued
banging on the windshield of Scurlocks' car. Scurlock produced
a weapon, got out of his car and fired one shot at Smith striking
him in the chest. He died at the scene.
Scurlock was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital
complaining of chest pains. He was later released and booked into
the city jail. Jay Everett Scurlock has been charged with murder
in the 232nd State District Court.
