Incident at 11810 Algonquin

December 31, 2006 -- Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man at 11810 Algonquin about 2:50 a.m. today (Dec. 31).

The victim, Johnathan Omar Fontenot, 23, of 10023 Kirkvale Drive suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and died at the scene.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant O. Belmarez and Officer R. Carstens reported:

Mr. Fontenot was at the residence of a friend when he pulled a revolver from his pant pocket and started playing with it in his hands. According to witnesses, Fontenot took the bullets out of the gun and pulled the trigger as he put it to his head. He attempted to pull the trigger for a second time when the gun discharged striking him in the head. Fontenot was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is continuing.
