Incident at 9540 Kempwood
August 25, 2006 -- Charges of
attempted capital murder of a police officer are pending against
a suspect who shot an on-duty officer twice at 9540 Kempwood about
11:05 p.m on Wednesday (August 23).
The suspect, a male known only as "Gordo"
at this time, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was transported
to Ben Taub General Hospital.
HPD Officer D.W. Starr, sworn in as an officer
in July 1985 and assigned to the Northwest Patrol Division, suffered
a contusion from the bullets that struck his bullet proof vest.
He was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant L.A. Flores and
Officer E.R. Carstens reported:
Security guards at the above location alerted
Officer Starr of two males on the property with guns. Officer
Starr requested back up, advised officers of the situation and
started searching for one of the suspects. He found one suspect,
ordered him to drop his weapon and come out of the bushes in which
he was hiding. The suspect then shot at the officer, striking
him in the chest area protected by the bullet proof vest. Officer
Starr returned fire and struck the suspect multiple times.
As is customary in officer-involved shootings
in the city limits, the incident is under investigation by the
HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions and the Harris County
District Attorney's office.
