Traffic Incident at 8800 East Freeway
April 30, 2006 -- Charges are
pending against a suspect involved in a fatal traffic accident
at 8800 East Freeway about 6 a.m. on Saturday (Apr. 29).
The victim is identified as Jorge Alberto Mendoza,
22, of Baytown.
HPD Mobility Incident Management Division Lieutenant
A. Bukowski and Officer J.W. Nickell reported:
The driver of a 2000 Ford Escape traveling east
on the East Freeway struck Mendoza who was walking on the freeway.
The driver failed to stop and render aid to Mendoza whom was critically
injured in the accident. Investigators determined that Mendoza
had been arguing with his twin brother prior to the accident and
asked to be let out of the vehicle in which he was traveling.
Mendoza's brother complied with his request and drove off. Unable
to reach Mendoza by cell phone, the brother returned to the area
and discovered his body lying on the eastbound inside shoulder
of the freeway. Evidence at the scene led to the apprehension
of the suspected hit and run driver about 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Alcohol may have been a factor.
The investigation is continuing.
