Incident at 3900 Broadway
April 6, 2006 -- Charges are
pending against a suspect arrested in the shooting of a man at
3900 Broadway about 7:50 p.m. on Wednesday (Apr. 5).
The suspect is identified as William Jamaal Ellis
(b/m, DOB 3/10/81). He remains in custody.
Investigators are seeking the public's help in
identifying the victim who was transported to Ben Taub General
Hospital in critical condition. He is Hispanic, 20-30 years of
age, approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing approximately
150 pounds. He was wearing a yellow T-shirt, blue jeans, a brown
belt and a pair of new black dress shoes. The victim was riding
on Metro bus #3498, Route #50.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant C. Grysen and
Officer T. Hufstedler reported:
According to witnesses, the victim was seated
aboard a moving Metro bus near the front when William Ellis, who
was seated at the rear, got up and approached him. As Ellis neared
the front of the bus, he pulled a handgun and shot the victim
in the head. Ellis then fled on foot to a near by church where
he surrendered to the pastor who disarmed and held him until police
arrived. A motive for the shooting is unknown at this time.
