HPD Charges Suspect in Galleria Sexual Assaults
October 21, 2005 -- Investigators
from the Houston Police Homicide Division Sex Crimes Unit have
identified and charged a 23-year-old in the 2003 aggravated sexual
assault of a woman that happened in the Galleria area. The suspect,
Juan Reyes Solis, (Hm/ DOB 10-6-82)
was identified through DNA evidence gathered from a August 30,
2003 sexual assault that occurred in a southwest Houston parking
garage. Solis is believed to also be responsible for several burglaries
of residences.
Officer Keith McMultry reported that in the August
2003 incident, a 19-year-old female was getting into her parked
vehicle when Solis approached, struck her, knocked her to the
ground and forced her into her own vehicle. Solis then drove her
to an unknown location and sexually assaulted her. The victim
was able to break-free and contact police. Her vehicle, which
was a rental, was later located in the area where she was first
attacked.
On October 1, 2003 an alert Houston police officer
on patrol spotted Solis attempting to break in to an ATM located
on Richmond Ave. near the Galleria. After a short pursuit Solis
was arrested, charged and later convicted for criminal mischief.
While in the Texas Department of Correction facilities, Solis
provided DNA, which later linked him to several burglaries and
eventually connected him to the sexual assault of the 19-year-old
female. Solis will be brought back to Houston from TDC to answer
to the sexual assault charges.
