Update on Incident at 5501 Perkins
October 21, 2005 -- Charges
have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting
of a man at 5501 Perkins about 1 a.m. on Tuesday (Oct. 18).
The suspect, Nathaniel Nevelle Taylor (b/m, DOB
11/12/76), was initially charged with aggravated assault, however,
the charge has been upgraded to murder in the 180th State District
Court due to the victim's death. Taylor was arrested without incident
at his residence at 4410 1/2 Oats on October 19. He was in possession
of cocaine at the time of his arrest.
The victim, Raymond Charles Mays, 31, of 4411
New Orleans #207 suffered a gunshot wound to the head and later
died of his injuries.
H.P.D. Homicide Division Sergeant B.J. Harris
and Officer T.J. McCorvey reported:
Witnesses saw Raymond Mays being confronted by
Taylor in the parking lot of a local food market. Taylor produced
a handgun and shot Mr. Mays once in the head. HFD paramedics responded
to the scene and transported Mays to Ben Taub General Hospital.
The motive for the shooting appears to be drug related.
