Traffic Incident at 7100 Clarewood
October 10, 2005 -- Houston
police are investigating the death of a suspect driving a stolen
truck that crashed into a building in the 7100 block of Clarewood
about 11:25 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 9).
As is customary when a suspect dies in the presence
of police officers, the case is also being investigated by the
HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions. The Mobility Incident
Management Division is investigating since the incident was a
fatal traffic accident. The identity of the male suspect is pending
confirmation by the Harris County Medical Examiner's office.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeants M.W. McStravick
and C.W. Howard are reported:
HPD Officer D.A. Roesler of the Westside Patrol
Division was in his marked patrol vehicle waiting to turn from
a designated turn lane when a red Ford F-250 drove up and struck
the patrol vehicle from behind. Instead of stopping, the suspect
driving the truck quickly accelerated from the accident scene.
Officer Roesler activated his emergency lights
and siren in an attempt to stop the driver of the truck. However,
the suspect made no attempt to stop or slow down. The suspect
drove through several city streets at a high rate of speed as
he attempted to evade Officer Roesler. Shortly after, the suspect
lost control of the truck and struck a tree and then a building.
The suspect died at the scene. Officer Roesler was not injured.
It was later determined the truck the suspect
was driving was stolen.
