Victims Sought in Series of Sexual Assaults
July 22, 2005 -- Houston police
are asking possible victims to come forward after two are arrested
and charged in a series of aggravated sexual assaults that occurred
from May of 2003 to July 2005 in the Fondren Police District area.
During a follow-up investigation into the arrest
of Paul Bernard Whigham (bm / DOB 1-19-72) and Nkrumah Lamumba
Valier (bm/ DOB 2-11-70), HPD Sex Crimes Sergeant B.E. Roberts
learned that eight additional cases may be linked to the actions
of the two suspects. In addition, it is believed that there are
some cases that have not been reported to the police. There was
no relationship between the two suspects except they were possibly
committing the same type of crime in the same area. The suspects
were both positively identified from a photo-line-up and charged
with aggravated sexual assault weapon. Nkrumah Valier was also
tentatively identified as a suspect in a robbery investigated
by the HPD Westside Robbery Division.
Details of the incidents are as follows:
Victims reported the a black male about 5 feet
6 inches to 6 feet tall, (some cases with braided or platted hair)
and unshaven would pick-up women and threaten them with either
a gun or knife or both before sexually assaulting them. On many
occasions the victims were left on dead end streets unclothed.
The most common location was in the 8300 block of Williamcrest.
Valier was arrested on June 10, 2005 and charged in the 185th
State District Court. Whigham was arrested on July 5, 2005 and
charged in the 339th State District Court. Photos of both suspects
are NOT available pending the completion of this investigation.
Investigators are asking any women who may have
been sexually assaulted by one or both of these men to call the
Houston Police Department Sex Crimes Unit at 713-308-1180.
