February 23, 2005 -- Tuesday,
February 22, 2005, Houston Police Department Westside Patrol Division,
in cooperation with the Vice Division and Federal Bureau of
Investigations (FBI), conducted a prostitution sting operation
in the area of Bissonnet and the Sam Houston Tollway. Westside
Division Captain Bownds reported that 15 suspects were arrested.
There were a total of ten felony charges as well as twenty-four
misdemeanor charges. Also arrested was a male suspect who was
charged with compelling prostitution.
The Westside Patrol Division and Vice Division
were responding to several complaints received from citizens complaining
about prostitution in the area.
The prostitution law applies to anyone who offers
or agrees to engage in a sexual act for a fee. Often, the public
perceives that only the prostitute commits a criminal violation.
