December 31, 2005 -- Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident at Beltway 8 and Northchase about 1:20 a.m. today (Dec. 31).

The identity of the deceased victim is pending verification by the Harris County Medical Examiner's office.

HPD Mobility Incident Management Division Sergeant D.S. Runyan and Officer S. Martinez reported:

A vehicle being driven by the victim entered onto the Beltway by driving across the grassy median at the dead end of Northchase. Once on the Beltway, the victim's vehicle stalled in a moving lane of traffic. The driver of another vehicle struck the victim as he exited his disabled vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A mandatory blood sample was taken from the driver of the striking vehicle. The deceased victim showed signs of intoxication. Three passengers in the striking vehicle were transported to an area hospital with unknown injuries.

The investigation is continuing.
