HPD Homicide Division Officers M. Walker and
K. Carr reported:
HPD Officers M.A. Valles and D.F. De Torres,
while on routine patrol, observed a suspicious 2003 Honda sports
utility vehicle near Hillcroft and Bellaire. The vehicle, with
two men inside, matched the description of a vehicle used in several
robberies earlier in the day. The vehicle was stopped at 6500
Dunlap for further investigation. A registration check of the
suspects' vehicle revealed that it was stolen during a burglary
of a residence one day earlier.
As Officer Valles took custody of the driver
(Thompson), the passenger (Ford) exited he front seat of the Honda
holding a handgun. When Johnathan Ford raised his weapon in a
threatening manner, Officer Valles fired his service weapon twice,
striking Ford at least once. Ford attempted to run, but fell to
the ground several feet away.
Officer Valles is assigned to the Fondren Patrol
Division. He was sworn in as an officer in December 1995. As is
customary, the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions and
the Harris County District Attorney's office are investigating
the incident.
