City of Houston to Celebrate White Cane Safety Day
October 9, 2024 -- White Cane Safety Day celebrates the importance of the white cane for individuals with vision loss and blindness. The white cane first came into prominence in the 1920’s and 1930’s and are now an international symbol of disability. Texas-born President Lyndon Johnson declared October 15 as White Cane Safety Day in 1964 and since 2007, Houston has been commemorating the day annually. This annual event educates the Houston community while promoting the independence and achievements of those who rely on the white cane for safe travel.
“In Houston, and across the nation we come together in the month of October to recognize the critical role that the white cane and service animal play in empowering the blind and low vision community,” said Angel Ponce, Director of the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities.
Event Highlights:
- Mayoral Proclamation: The event will kick off with an official proclamation from the Houston Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities.
- Keynote Speakers: Speakers from City department management and special guests
- Live Performances: Experience captivating live performances that celebrate the accomplishments and independence of individuals with vision loss.
- Door Prizes: Attendees have the chance to win various door prizes.
